Giving Tuesday is December 1st! At Final we believe in giving back year round, which is why we are a member of 1% for the Planet and donate 1% of our annual sales to environmental nonprofits every year. But this year, we wanted to give a little more on Giving Tuesday.
That’s why we decided to team up with our nonprofit partner Habits of Waste (HoW)! We’ll be donating 10% of our Black Friday (Friday, November 27, 2020) sales to HoW on Giving Tuesday.
Like Final, HoW wants to leave the planet better than we found it. That’s why they’re helping people make small shifts in their daily routines that can ultimately help reduce enormous levels of waste. Here are a few ways we’ve teamed up this year!
#CutOutCutlery Campaign
When we launched FinalCutlery, we knew it would pair with HoW’s #CutOutCutlery campaign like peas and carrots. The campaign strives to change habits when it comes to single-use plastic cutlery and reduce the 40 billion plastic utensils that are thrown away every year.
HoW’s team has convinced Postmates and Uber Eats to change their default settings so that no one receives plastic cutlery unless they opt-in and request it. Since joining the campaign in October 2019, Postmates alone has prevented 122,000,000 packs of plastic cutlery from being automatically included in orders!
Goodfull on BuzzFeed made a video about the campaign in November! The video features celebrities, activists, and our CEO & Founder who are all working hard to help people rid their lives of single-use plastic cutlery. They show us their drawers of unwanted plastic cutlery that have been given to them (if not forced upon them) over the years… it’s a sad reality that most of us easily relate to.
HoW’s team says their work won’t be complete until they’ve convinced every food delivery company to change their default settings to requesting plastic cutlery, instead of automatically providing it. Want to help make this the new norm? You can make a difference by sending an email with just 1 click!
#8Meals Campaign
Habits of Waste’s small but mighty team isn’t stopping with cutlery. They’re also making an impact by encouraging people to eat at least 8 plant-based meals a week. Why 8 meals? Well, being 100% vegan is unattainable for many people. HoW wants to take the pressure off of the 100% plant-based lifestyle and encourage people to do their best, one step (or meal) at a time.
A study at the University of Michigan and Tulane University discovered that adopting a plant-based diet is the number one way an individual can combat climate change. If people decrease the animal protein they consume and swap out 8 meals (or about 40-50% of their meals) every week, we could significantly reverse climate change.
How can you help?
- Try making 8 of your meals plant-based this week!
- Encourage your friends to tackle the challenge.
- Help HoW turn #8meals into a movement by sharing on social media. Here’s a sample caption you can share with your followers: “Scientists recommend we cut our animal protein intake by at least 40% in order to protect the planet. That’s 8 meals a week. Who’s in? I’m joining @howchangers to be #imperfectlyvegan through their campaign called #8meals”
Want to know another pretty fantastic perk when you eat plant-based meals? 99% of the time you won’t need a steak knife… that means you can probably #CutOutCutlery and enjoy your #8meals with your FinalSpork!
So what are you waiting for? This Giving Tuesday celebrate with us by making one small change! Who knows, it might just last for the entire holiday season and well into the new year!
